Bagless Days – Enriching Activity Based Learning
In this era, children need to be smart and acquire the 21 century learning skills which are beneficial for them in multiple ways. To engage learners in fun – filled learning, the chairperson of New Green Field Education Society, Mrs. Protima Parbhakar introduced the concept of Bagless Days on working Saturdays, i.e., first and fifth of every month.
She believes in providing not only a comfortable learning environment to the students but also gives opportunities to them to excel in co – curricular activities which enhance the overall development of the students. She is of the opinion that school should be a piece of paradise for the young learners where they can intensify their creativity, stimulate their imagination and satiate their curiousity.
The initiative of Bagless Days started at the beginning of the session wherein students were guided about the activities and told to come to school without any books and notebooks. This created excitement among the students and also developed a feeling of joy.
The students were full of energy and enthusiasm and their pleasing smiles were telling it all. Coming to school with so many colourful materials and no books evolved a feeling of respect and pride in them towards their school. Bagless Days have been introduced in all the branches of New Green Field Schools, i.e., Saket, Alaknanda and Malviya Nagar.
Children not only enjoy doing the activities on these days but also learn a lot through these tasks be it – Class I students performing role – plays about health and hygiene, Class IV learning about correct formation of sentences, punctuation, mathematical concepts and exploring latitudes and longitudes using wool of different colours. Not only the primary wing, but also the secondary and senior secondary students get hands – on – experiences which lead to influential learning.
Activities related to vocabulary, story telling, enactment, etc. help the students to gain confidence and reduce their fear of speaking in public. It has been noted that this plan of action has helped the underachievers also establish a zeal and has raised the bar of learning for them as well.
School is a place where children spend maximum years of their studies, where they learn basic moral ethics, traits like responsibility, honesty, empathy and many more. So it is the responsibility of the school staff to make it so memorable and enriching for them that they remember and cherish it throughout their lives.
Indeed, this initiative by the chairperson will foster the overall development of the children and also provide them unforgettable experiences of learning and creating a special bond with the teachers as well as the school. It is also going to be a propelling force for all the educators to transform the teaching learning techniques so as to shape the lives of the future citizens of the country in a unique way.
